‘RAGA’ and ‘RASA’


There’s a special meaning to a word ‘rasa’ in classical vocal as well as instrumental music. The different ragas point outs the specific ‘rasa’. The different rasa’s like shrungara, karuna, veera, bhakthi... which specifies the particular ragas will help to know the layers of music.
What actually the meaning of ‘RASA’ in music world?
According to Bharatha, in his classical dance there are nine different kinds of RASA. There are..,
Ø Veera rasa
Ø Karuna rasa
Ø Adbhuta rasa
Ø Hasya rasa
Ø Shrungara rasa
Ø Bhayanaka rasa
Ø Bheebhatsa rasa
Ø Roudra rasa
Ø Shanta rasa
There’s an opportunity to exhibit these nine rasas in different arts. It may b in lyrical, musical,dance,yakhagana, rangabhumi n in many more.
A musician can show clearly the taste of veera rasa, karuna rasa, bhakti rasa, shrungara rasa with his fusion experiments of music. In music the different ragas produce the particular rasa. For example adhna raga, Hindola ragas are suitable for veera rasa.

Karuna rasa:

The ragas like todi, gurjari todi, bilaskhani todi, jog raga,asavari ragas ‘ll produce the karuna rasa which feels sadness, poorness situations.
Roudra rasa:
This rasa ‘ll produce in the anger situations. It can be easily identified by different statues in dance.
Haasya rasa:
This rasa ‘ll produce in the humour situations Which can be seen usually in the rangabhumi.
Adbhuta rasa:
This rasa’ll podduced in the astonishing situations which is usually used in bharathanatyam with different statues. And this adbhuta rasa can also be produced by the Hindusthani music using different ragas with alankaras,tals says musicians.
Bhayanaka rasa:
It can b shown thro’ acting. we can identify bhayanaka rasa in yakshgana also.
Shanta rasa:
Some of very famous ragas like darabari kanada, bheemplasi, malkouns point outs this shanta rrasa.
Shrungara rasa:
Many ragas represents this shrungara rasa. Shrungara rasa is the main rasa in music. Some ragas like yaman, khamaj, kaphi, tilak kamod, basant, bahar ragas produse this shrungara rasa.
Bhebhatsa rasa:
This rasa ‘ll produced in the horror, avoiding situations. Some ragas like rageshree, marva ragas produce this bheebhtsa rasa.
Bhakti rasa:
Bhajanas with selected ragas produce the bhakthi rasa.Some ragas like bhyrav, purvi ragas produces this bhakthi rasa.
Some of karnatic classical ragas also represents some particular rasa. Some ragas like kamach, mohan represents shrungara rasa. similarly kaphi represents both hasya and shrungara rasa. Raga saveri- karuna rasa, shree and madhyamavati- bhakti rasa, athana and bhegade- veera rasa, respectively. The mela karta ragas namely kalyani and shankarabharana are suits for al nine rasas. Raga hamsadhvani represents the fusion of veera rasa and bhakti rasa.
Like this the actions-reactions by the situations appear in the human life is different which can be shown by the music with ragas. This clear us that the tight relation b/wn “RAGA” and “RASA”.
